Noir: “And He Wrote A Poem”

“An Adolescent Poet’s Response to Unrequited Love”

And he wrote a poem.

And he called it “Snowball”

Because “Snowball” was the name of his puppy

And that was what it was all about.

And his teacher gave him a gold star

And a huge smile…

And she hung it on the bulletin board

For everyone to see.

And he wrote a poem.

And he called it “Autumn”

Because it was that time of the year

And that was what it was all about

And his teacher gave him an “A”

And a “pat” on the back…

And his mother hung it on the refrigerator door

For everyone to see.

And he wrote a poem.

And he called it “Amanda”

Because she was his girlfriend,

And that was what it was all about.

And his teacher gave him an “A”

And a long, hard, look…

And his mother didn’t hang it on the refrigerator door

Because he didn’t show it to her.

And on the back of a “Dear John letter”–He wrote a poem.

And he called it “Life Without Meaning”

Because his was ending

And that was what it was all about.

And he gave himself an “A”

And a slash on each wrist

And he hung it on the bathroom door

Because he couldn’t reach the kitchen.
